Ready for Life Initiative – Powerfully Impacts Employers

On June 8, 2010, Applied Staffing Solutions looked at the Washoe County Ready for Life initiative. What does it mean for employers that Nevada has the worst high school dropout rate in the nation? It translates to losing our competitive edge locally and globally.

Nevada’s dropout rate weakens the labor market and hinders economic growth. Dropouts are more likely than high school graduates to be:

unemployed and underemployed

living in poverty

living with low expectations

receiving welfare

incarcerated

parents of children who dropout.

Employers who take the time to set up a youth internship, coaching/mentoring or job shadow program provide opportunities to:

explore potential career interests

gain valuable work-related skills, attitudes, and traits

establish community relationships

strengthen résumés

earn extra income.

We understand the challenges facing employers when asked to work with youth. With a workforce doing more with less people, finding time to train inexperienced young people is difficult. Trades people are staying in positions longer and not leaving the workplace like previous generations. This results in a bottleneck and an unbalance between proven experience and raw talent.

You do not have to re-invent the wheel. Local employers utilize proven procedures to create a “doable” plan. Your first step is to contact a local youth work program provider. There are many organizations designed to help youth prepare and find jobs. For example, in Washoe County you can email the following:

Washoe County School District Learn & Earn Work-Based Program

Stacie Peterson, Career & Technical Education Program Liaison/Recruiter

speterson@washoe.k12.nv.us

Washoe County School District Transitions Program

Laura DuPree, Job Developer

Sierra Nevada Job Corps

Joy Erdelt, Work-Based Learning Specialist (Entire state of Nevada contact)

Future Washoe County Ready for Life installments will include tips to help employers build an on-going youth work program and tips for youth on how to work with employers.
